Course Details
- When: Mondays and Fridays, 6–8 p.m. Eastern Time.
- Duration: 10 months.
- Start: October 26th, 2026.
- End: September 3rd, 2027.
- Where: In person in Mississauga, Canada, or online via Zoom.
Note: this course is equivalent to ARB1 in the IISDP program.
Build the Skills to Read, Understand, and Write Arabic
You can read the Qur’an in Arabic. Now take the first step towards understanding it.
Over 10 months, you’ll work on:
- Reading Arabic with understanding.
- Using grammar to make sense of sentences.
- Building your vocabulary.
- Writing your own sentences and paragraphs.
Learn It Then Use It
Put each new lesson into practice.
- Learn a grammar rule, then find it in your reading.
- Study word patterns, then practise forming words.
- Learn vocabulary in context and review it regularly.
- Start with simple sentences and build towards longer writing.
The curriculum draws on the course designer’s six years of ESL teaching experience at a university level.
The approach is simple: learn, practise, review, and build.
What You'll Work Towards
With regular attendance and completed homework, you will, inshaAllah:
- Start reading an Arabic book in your first month, with your teacher’s guidance.
- Use grammar to understand what you read.
- Recognize word and verb patterns and use them to build your vocabulary.
- Write a paragraph in Arabic by the end of the course.

Learn how to keep studying independently, using a dictionary and effective study habits.
What You Need Before Joining
Be able to read Qur’anic Arabic fluently.
- You do not need to understand it yet.
- Tajwid is helpful, but not required.
Make time for class and homework every week.
- Four hours of class.
- Two to six hours of homework.
- Regular attendance and review.
Homework is an essential part of the course. Each week builds on the last, so please enrol only if you can commit to both class time and independent practice.
Instructor
Sheikh Muhammad Elmarouk is based in Toronto, Canada, where he is actively engaged in teaching, community leadership, and advanced Islamic scholarship.
A dedicated student and teacher of the Islamic sciences, Muhammad has studied overseas and continues his lifelong pursuit of knowledge. He holds a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies with a focus on theology and philosophy, and specializes in fiqh, spirituality (tazkiyah), and Islamic theology & philosophy.
He has studied the Islamic Sciences for the past 8 years with qualified teachers in Mauritania, Jordan, and Turkey.
He is a Ḥāfiẓ of the Qur’an with ijāzahs in the riwāyah of Ḥafṣ, and is currently pursuing mastery of the ten qirāʾāt.
Sh. Muhammad is a professional Arabic calligrapher, and holds an ijāzah in the Thuluth script.
He serves the community as an Imam, public speaker, and educator, and is the founder and director of the Basira Youth Seminary.
Sh, Muhammad is a devoted husband and father of two.
